Sometimes, in our business, a project comes along that gets so far under your skin you know it will stay with you for a long time. Occasionally, it’s because it was such a harrowing experience you cannot shake the memory - shivers at the thought of the 3 weeks spent in the company of Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards. Thankfully, and altogether more rewardingly, some projects stay with you because the experience of working on them was profoundly moving.
One project was the work we did recently with Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) Forces Help. When SSAFA first approached us to help them make a short film and keynote presentation about their organisation, the job was logged, scheduled in, quoted and an initial meeting was set up – just like any other job. It was at that initial meeting that it became clear that this wasn’t going to be ‘any other job’. After just two hours in the company of their Director of Fundraising and Head of Regional Fundraising the full gravity of what SSAFA do for our service personnel and those they love was clear to see.
In the course of the project we met, among others, a young man who had suffered life-threatening injuries while serving in Afghanistan, an ex-service family whose lives were torn apart when their young son was diagnosed with cancer and the father of a young Major General who lost his life while serving in Iraq; all had been touched by SSAFA and the work they do, and, as a result, all would do whatever they could to raise awareness of SSAFA.
As the project drew to a close, all at Pillory Barn felt humbled to have met so many remarkable people - people whose stories will stay with us for a very long time. Stories we will pass on to others – stories that will help continue to spread the word about SSAFA Forces Help.
SSAFA is under our skin and will stay there for a very long time.
