Leading regional law firm Brachers has advised Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (Sussex Partnership) in their acquisition of The Downs Nursing Home, Hove, from Southern Cross. This secures the future of the nursing home, the care it provides to 25 patients and the jobs of over 50 staff who work there.
In July this year, Southern Cross announced it was to shut down after landlords owning all 752 of its care homes said they wanted to leave the group which cast doubts over the future care of 31,000 residents.
Paul Dungate, Corporate & Commercial Partner at Brachers, commented: “This was a complex matter involving numerous parties both in the UK and abroad. From start to finish we had just less than a month to complete the deal. It was therefore particularly pleasing to have been able to secure such favourable terms for our client. Staff at The Downs Nursing Home have transferred to the employment of Sussex Partnership. The day to day operation of the home will not change and residents there will not be affected by the change of ownership.”
The Downs Nursing Home is based in the same building as the Trust’s Nevill Hospital, which is used for older people’s mental health services.
Sussex Partnership Assistant Chief Executive Ann Merricks, commented:”We were impressed by Brachers’ open, realistic and commercial advice that enabled Sussex Partnership to complete this transaction in a short timeframe. The Downs Nursing Home is well regarded for the care and compassion it offers to residents. We are delighted that the home will stay open and that we have secured its future under the umbrella of Sussex Partnership and will ensure that residents continue to receive care appropriate to their needs.”
