ASHFORD’S PUBLIC REALM SHARED SPACE WINS ANOTHER AWARD
Ashford’s shared space is continuing to grow its reputation and has won another prestigious award – announced on March 3rd at the Sustain Magazine awards.
The award for Public Realm was crowned to Kent County Council for Ashford’s deconstruction of the former ring road, replacing it with quality streets and shared space. The judges comments were: “The challenge has been to re-engage the public with the centre of town and the degree of success achieved here should inspire many other similar schemes.”
Ashford was up against three other projects, including One Vine Street, a project in central London which has BREEAM Excellent rating for sustainability measures, such as rain water harvesting and zoned lighting.
“The ring road team was delighted and honored to receive this prestigious award,” said Richard Stubbings, Kent County Council’s Regeneration and Projects Manager. “The Ashford shared space scheme sees a new ground breaking approach to the design of our public spaces in towns, where mutual respect between drivers and pedestrians is the key to new civilised streets.”
The Sustain Magazine awards recognize the best examples of creativity, commitment and distinction in the field of sustainability.
They also offer the industry a true reflection of the current picture of sustainability in projects at large. There were 83 short listed entries and 350 guests attended the evening at the Novotel Hotel, Hammersmith, London.
This is the second award that the scheme has won. In 2008 it was awarded by the Landscape Institute, against 400 competitors, for the projects pioneering development and the judges said that “This proposal is pioneering in this country. What is being attempted has huge potential both at Ashford and elsewhere in the UK.”
The project was also included in the Kent Design: Showcased - Streets and Open Spaces, which highlights new building projects celebrating sustainability and innovation in Kent.
